The length of hospice care depends on the patient’s and their family’s needs. Typically, hospice care is provided for six months or less, but it can be extended if the patient’s condition does not improve or they continue to require palliative care. If a patient’s condition improves or chooses to discontinue hospice care, they can be discharged from hospice at any time and return to curative treatments. However, the decision to continue or discontinue hospice care should be made in consultation with the hospice team and the patient’s physician, taking into account the patient’s wishes, medical condition, and quality of life.
